M.Arch Urban Design - Semester 1

Urban Design Studio

Urban design occurs across all parts of a city, from inner city to suburbs and outer metropolitan fringe. Quality urban design contributes to nature, built environments and livability of our cities. Urban design considers the urban spaces, forms, landscape and encourages and incorporates natural ecosystems. Creating places for people takes into account the unique characteristics of a location and its community.

The objective of this Studio project was to study, analyze and document the built environment of the Old Core – Mahal area of Nagpur, with three dimensional models. This study was later used to convert the learning to appropriate design interventions.  The students communicated design ideas through graphics, conceptual diagrams and other means.  Land use, Building Typology, Urban Spaces, Activity Pattern and Transformation in the old core were all documented by the students and detailed analysis was done for the same.

Designing a Public Library gave students an opportunity to study several aspects of Urban Insert. This building was designed keeping in mind the urban context with respect to city and immediate surroundings. Public buildings have a major role in not just creating identity and but also contributing towards the visual, social and physical attributes of the neighbourhood and city.
